Walks & Hikes

The New Zealand Department of Conservation maintain an excellent range of tracks in this area, providing walks and longer hikes to some awe-inspiring scenery and 'hidden' treasures of nature.

Climb 30 minutes to the towering St. Paul's Rock and see 360 degrees of beauty - including the entire Whangaroa Harbour.

The Mahinepua Peninsula Track is a 2 kilometre track which provides access to the many sheltered bays.

Another walk of note is the Motukawanui Island Track - a 1.5 hour traverse of the largest island in the Cavalli group - which gives amazing views of Mahinepua Peninsula, Matauri Bay and the Cavalli Islands.

Kauri Forests

On the west coast, you'll find the 'Kauri Coast' where the best remaining of New Zealand's once mighty Kauri forest can be found. The Kauri timber and gum industry flourished here in the 19th century, generating much of New Zealand's wealth.

The massive forests are gone now, but the Waipoua Kauri Forest is the best place in the country to see these magnificent trees. A short drive (20 to 30 minutes) will take you to there.

You can also see the Puketi and Omahuta forests. Take the loop track for an easy 15-minute walk (wheelchair accessible) to see mighty Kauri trees that are some 800 years old.
